INTRO MEME

Welcome to Expiation and come on down! We're thrilled to have you here! This intro entry serves additionally as a CR meme, so you are free to use it to say hello, tell us a bit about yourself, talk about your character, and potential plans for the game.

The tablets don’t normally play ads, but on May 5, they do. Everyone receives the same image at the same time, as if a pop-up ad has been sent out to every device:

There is no other information given. Tapping on the tablet’s screen outside of the ad will make it go away with no effect; players can choose to have it appear only once, or persistently. “Sign up now” is a button, and when tapped (either on purpose or by accident), the ad just…goes away. How odd.

THE TOWER

On May 20, anyone who signed up for this strange ad, whether intentional or not, wakes up on the ground floor of a tower with no way out and stairs leading upward. They’ll find doors as they climb, and behind each of these doors is a challenge. The goal of the tower will be simple, as explained to each character: there are four categories of challenges (outlined below). Each competitor must win one of each challenge type to conquer the tower, at which point they will be given a reward.

We leave the nature of these challenges up to you, but the following details will be the same for each challenge:

One, each challenge falls under one of four categories, outlined below. The size, nature, and scope of these challenges is left up to you, and can fall under any of these categories. You can do as many or as few as you would like.

Two, characters will find themselves facing off against another character, in direct competition for each of these challenges.

THE CHALLENGES

Wands. Challenges in the wands category focus on will and creativity. This includes creative solutions to problems, tests of resolve, examining accomplishments, and exploring what is important to your character.
Swords. The swords category centers reason, logic, wisdom, and intellect. This category also emphasizes adversity and problems, feeling trapped, and situations of oppression/cruelty.
Cups. Challenges in this category might pertain to spiritual matters, emotion, love, and examining your past or your feeling. Cups can encourage characters to face feelings head-on, or to focus on memories, whether accurate or not.
Coins. Emphasizing material matters and possessions, this is a category that focuses on physical, tangible challenges. These don’t have to be related to money; anything with high stakes (tests, games, etc) as well as challenges of physicality can fit into the category.

The categories are broad by design; we encourage you to think creatively about how you set up your challenges, and what category they may fit under best! Not all of these have to be physical fighting challenges, either. They can be any situation where one character is directly compared against another. Some examples: squats competitions, knitting the longest scarf, rap battles, test scores, the quiet game, challenges to not fight or not touch things, “the floor is lava,” races, really the sky and your imagination is the limit.

COMPETITION RULES

Winning. What determines a challenge win will vary based on the challenge given. If the win condition is to best your opponent in battle, you win by doing that! But if the challenge is “do not fight,” then winning a battle against a competitor could make you lose the challenge. We encourage you to be creative with challenges and win conditions.

Three strikes. Everyone has a loss now and then, but losing three times will kick a participant out of the competition. Not everyone can emerge a winner!

Knockouts and death. Strangely, death does not seem to be a permanent condition within the tower. Characters who die will wake up just as if they were knocked unconscious, unscathed and ready for the next round.

Forfeit. Characters can choose “fuck this, I’m out” as an option at any time! But you can’t reenter the tower once you leave.

Draws. If two characters tie, neither wins and neither loses. No one will collect a win for the category, but it doesn’t count as a loss either! They find themselves back on the tower steps, climbing to their next challenge.

Determining winners. We encourage you to determine who wins each challenge individually by whatever means makes most sense to you.

Leaving the tower. Characters who decide to leave, or characters who are eliminated from the competition, will wake in Aldrip to find that very little time has passed in their absence, no matter how long it seems like it’s been.

MEANWHILE, BACK IN ALDRIP…

The mAPP application on tablets has gotten an upgrade along with the rest of Expiation. However, it doesn’t always seem…accurate? Sometimes it seems to add buildings, roads, or even whole neighborhoods that aren’t actually there. Sometimes it puts a location pin on areas outside of town that you’ve definitely never been to…they don’t always seem to even exist.

It also seems to have added a percentage at the bottom, indicating how much of the map you’ve actually been to. Here’s a fun fact: even if you’ve been to every nook and cranny in Aldrip, even if you’ve walked every street and every district, the percentage tops out at 95%. It never goes any higher. Strange! But that’s fine. It’s probably just a weird little bug…right?

Character: Claude von Riegan
Canon: Fire Emblem: Three Houses

Crime: Deception

Background: Claude is a young man with big dreams, the newly appointed Duke of the Leicester Alliance after his grandfather's death, and while he attended school hoping only to strengthen his bonds with his fellow classmates, found himself thrown into the task of keeping the Alliance neutral as he secretly prepares for war. Secretly, Claude is actually the Prince of a different country entirely and, after facing a lifetime of discrimination due to his biracial identity, fled to Fodlan to experience the other half of his bloodline and to pursue his dream of ending racial discrimination. Claude himself is deceptively flippant and cheerful, with a lust for life and a love for parties and feasts. Deep down, he's an ambitious, determined schemer willing to do anything to achieve his goals. Deeper down than that... he'd really just like some friends.

Abilities: Politicking, organization, some minor magical abilities (if you want a piddly little wind or a tiny heal, he's your man, but it's not much), wyvern-riding, poison-making, and archery are his primary skills.

Plans: So for this month, Claude is dealing with his sentencing, which is that he has to be truly honest with someone, which is challenging when he's not even sure how to be honest with himself. I would love to play around with his increasing inability to lie as the sentencing wears on, with either new or old CR -- old CR will notice that he's unable to keep up his trademark jokes and smiles, and that he'll just be very uncharacteristically serious. I'm also open to him being unable to keep from blurting out his ~secret identity, or maybe spilling a few of his hidden fears or childhood traumas dealing with racism, his royal birth, numerous childhood assassination attempts and the fact that he's dealt with a lot of attempted fratricide.

Aside from his sentencing, I'm down for anything in the Tower! I'm afraid I don't have any ideas off the top of my head - that's going to take a little more brainpower than I've got atm LOL - but I think I'm more interested in fashioning challenges suited to particular pairs of CR than more generic ones anyway. If you're interested, let's try to plot something juicy out!

How can you run into my character? Claude runs the local apothecary for all of your needs (he sells all kinds of herbs, tinctures, teas, and yes, he sells marijuana too), is often out foraging for more, as well as riding on his wyvern. Otherwise, he's a busybody about town and does a lot of dealings with the locals. He's a supplier for Ethlyn's medical troop if that's a good avenue for CR, and can be found outside of city limits hunting or honing his combat skills. Basically, I can think up an excuse to toss him just about anywhere!

I just got done with a huge year+ long project at work (we're literally going live at midnight please wish me the best of luck) so I'm catching up on April stuff, but I'm tackling May with newfound motivation! I play lots of video games including FFXIV and farming sims, and have recently been reading an unreasonable amount of FE3H fanfiction.

Crime: Harboring of a criminal

Background: Sandry is a very stubborn and willful young noble who discovered that she has thread magic and lived four years in a temple with her adopted siblings before moving out to her uncle's citadel and now she helps him run both the citadel and the dutchy.

Abilities: Thread magic! She can control threads, fibers, and cloth and lay enchantments on them. She can even spin and weave unusual things with her magic, last month she spun memories into yarn and then wove them into compartmentalized blocks.

Plans: I have no specific plans for the tower but I'd like Sandry to participate! I'm looking for her to score one, maybe two victories before she gets kicked out for losing. Open to both new and old CR! Let me know if you want to either win or lose against her! Otherwise she's just hanging around, doing work and seeing her friends. Since she's social and out and about it's pretty easy to come up with a scenario where she can run into someone! Just let me know if you want a thread and we'll work something out.

How can you run into my character? Sandry works at a somewhat fancy tailor shop! Even in the recently transformed Aldrip they still focus on doing everything by hand, no sewing machines present at all. If you want something more bespoke or expertly tailored, you can find Sandry there! She also likes to be out in the nice weather, so you can catch her embroidering in a park, or just wandering around with good cheer.

Crime: disturbing the peace .... dont ask

Background: basically imagine a guy on a unicycle going downhill really fast ... vash is just a Normal Guy (super duper normal) who's a classic people pleaser to the point where he cosplays full time as a doormat. he has more layers than shrek but hopefully doesn't smell as bad especially now that he's in some civilised land instead of a planet that's 99.9% desert. maybe he hates sand but it's hard to tell, he probably likes a lot of things.

Abilities: he's really good at getting into trouble .... the rest you'll have to jump in and find out but he has a cool robot arm for starters

Plans: I WOULD LIKE TO DO TOWER STUFF PLEASE!!! it'll be fun to do some stupid challenges to break the ice and get cr / work on developing existing cr. also for the month of may (and ongoing??? who knows???) his hair is going to grow like crazy (from this to varying lengths of mess) so please help him with haircut and/or shaving AND/OR DONATE HAIRTIES/CLIPS/FUN STUFF! and don't make the connection between this and how plants/flora seem to also be growing super quick and crazy .... they're not related wdym ... he's also going to be helping with security for the casino opening so ??? judge this noodle man for volunteering to be a bouncer ig

Canon: Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
Canon Point: It's chapter 5 and Ethlyn and Quan are about to rejoin your army so you can clear your name, but then they get ambushed at one end of the desert while you're at the other and try as you might there is just no way your units can reach them before their HP is whittled down turn by turn

Crime: "The crimes of the Grannvale Empire"

Background: Ethlyn is a medieval noblewoman who had to take on the responsibilities of a whole duchess when she was 12, which has shaped her into a person with a strong and honestly overdeveloped sense of responsibility, as well as no concept of time off or not being busy. She is the mom friend, whether you want her to be or not. She's trained in healing and swordfighting, has two young children left at home, and also, died before getting here.

She's also been in Expi for over a year which means that she has been through a LOT, which on the one hand means it's not easy to throw her and she gets a bit of a +1 for composure in a crisis but on the other hand, BOY SHE HAS BEEN THROUGH A LOT. She has learned to be a little better about seeking help when she needs it at least! Also, her memories got muddled because she didn't pick up enough plot coupons, she got one fake memory, and now Aldrip has turned into a modern city??

She also runs the Willow Clinic and the Arztenritter, which is a small force of horseback healers (and also Toph as the earthbending ambulance) and she is always looking for new recruits.

Abilities: Healing (with a magic staff), very good at swords, knows how to ride horsj.

Plans: Ethlyn has slowly been piecing her memories back together after they got all hecked up. She's starting May pretty tired because SOMEONE went and took a bunch of ORGANS out of a GODDESS and then started a HUGE FIGHT that FILLED UP THE CLINIC WITH CASUALTIES. It was very rude and she did not get a lot of sleep. She probably needs someone to teach her about coffee tbh.

She's really hoping for a chiller month and will definitely be attending Mitama's picnic. She'll set up a first aid station at the Tower, both for people who get scuffed up and as a way to find people interested in learning how to do it. Although she won't actively be entering the competition, you could probably get her to do it by goading her into it! She's still a little sister at the end of the day.

How can you run into my character? Ethlyn is often found at the clinic itself (which is notable for looking like a rural-ass farmhouse in the middle of a city block, THANKS, HOLODECK PROGRAMMERS) and lately, out riding in the still "normal" fields surrounding the city. She also likes to to the shopping for the clinic's supplies herself, regularly practices with her sword if you're down to do a little sparring and/or talk shop about that, and generally bustles around making herself busy.

Background: Child solider and heroin addict from a hell world.

Abilities: Guns. Levi is real good with guns, mostly rifles and used to be a sharpshooter in his world. Also he's got some magic powers but it makes him crazy to use it

Plans: I got nothing. I want to put him in the tower but i've no ideas for challanges. he'll probably get fed up with it before making it to the top though. if anyone has any ideas hit me up

How can you run into my character? He still gets lost a lot so he's wandering around the city semi regularly. He has gainful employment but he still does monster hunting or odd jobs from the board now and then, more out of something to do than anything. he also really likes the library

Canon Point: After the last fighting game

Crime: Derilection of duty.

Background: Elizabeth was Door-kun's and Aigis' Velvet Room attendant through their ordeals, but seeing as team Aigis bit off more than they could chew what with a titan that would keep self reviving, she wandered off to protect her first guest's soul and try to figure a way to keep Erebus from being a Chumbawumba song.

Abilities: Velvet Room Attendant, and wild card user. Technically she can merge personas as well as use multiple ones. Things is she just has the one persona, Thanatos, and it isn't like they are common enough to moosh together here. I guess tarot card reading too, but that seems pretty mundane next to the other nonsense.

Plans: If you think I have plans, you obviously don't know me. I just charge into antics.

How can you run into my character? Elizabeth is very curious and prone to wander. She could concievably be anywhere people could be as she... Just kind of does what she feels like at the time. Maybe she's hungry, maybe she's looking for challenges, maybe she's lost. Who knows?

Anything Else?: I'm a compliance officer in a law firm and also a toddler mum so I basically spend my entire life cleaning up messes lmao. Aside from that I read voraciously and I'm a Greek mythology/history nerd. Other interests include cooking, board games, gardening and once upon a time; running. Hoping I can find some time to get back into the latter. I've also recently fallen back into watching more anime after a few years of not doing so and I love Dorohedoro, Trigun Stampede (need to watch the 90s version at some point), Spy x Family and Kaiju no. 8 at the moment.
Persona 3 Reload brain rot is also real.

Canon: Persona 3
Canon Point: Right after the Kyoto trip. I am planning to canon update her to post endgame at some point.

Crime: Corruption.

Background: Mitsuru is the rich, beautiful and troubled heiress to an evil mega corporation, the Kirijo Group, that "accidentally" unleashed monsters called Shadows into the world. She spent a large chunk of her childhood being something of a science experiment in order to figure out how to combat Shadows. Oh and she can summon a scary ice monster lady from her head, known as a Persona because of aforementioned science experiments.
She's super intelligent but kind of lacks a lot of common sense with Ordinary Person things due to her upbringing (how does she eat a hamburger, anyone?). She enjoys fencing, reading and fancy tea.

Abilities: See the aforementioned scary ice monster lady.

Plans: I am VERY interested in the Tower and doing some challenges so hit me up if you want an extremely intense and awkward way to get to know her better I'm all for it. I'll likely tag onto this with a record of her dance card and what challenges she's doing and with who below.
She's actually turning 19 on the 8th of this month and apparently there is some disaster birthday party planning going on behind the scenes for her?? idk ask her friends.
Mitsuru is also planning a takeover of the casino and a total refurb of the business so stay tuned for that.

How can you run into my character? She spends a whole lot of time at the library. She'll also be scoping out the casino a lot these days. Probably still doing some monster hunting jobs currently as well.

Crime: Attempted murder.

Background: Tiny detective who wants to be taken seriously, but is isolated from her colleagues due to her age.

Abilities: She's got a persona, a gun, can play piano and ballroom dance... Can't ski though.

Plans:
-For the start of the month Naoto is going to be dying from the hayfever. So network only until she gets antihistamines. Then she'll be about but a little out of it at times.
-She's being made to got to the TWAT club meeting by Yu. It was her birthday recently but she's not really talking about that and not a party-goer.
-Going to Spock's tech meeting. She's suspicious of the phones here and interested in having something under the radar.
-Not fully decided on what her tower challenge(s?) will be but defo going to have her take part in that.

How can you run into my character? Normally she's wandering about, doing odd jobs or just looking for information.
For this month she can also be found going to the pharmacy.
