Hello everyone. This is your head mod, Elise.

This time I come to you all with some really important and sad news. As of June 30th, we will be shutting Expiation down. This isn’t a decision we’ve made lightly, and has been on the table for a few months, but at this time we feel like it’s the best decision we can make for the game. Expiation has had a wonderful two and a half year streak, but we think it’s time.

That being said, there’s a possibility in us returning in a game similar to this one. The mod team has reviewed the feedback we’ve gotten through both polls, questionnaires and private messages. We have valued each input on the state of the game and suggested improvements. However, for us to be able to bring these changes into reality we can’t be running a game at the same time. The return of the game (whatever form it will take) will partially depend on the players’ interest. But a temporary closure will give us time to reflect on plot, mechanics, and exactly what game we want to run before we open.

When Jenni, Kri and myself took over in June 2023, we didn’t even think we were going to be here a year later. It’s because of you all that made this experience so special, and why we are currently thinking of rebuilding the game. There is no strict timeframe when this will happen as of right now, as we need to go back to the drawing board, but everyone’s recommendations and feedback will be considered in the restructuring. Lycoris, Vette, and Jenni have helped us so much, but we have come to the conclusion that this is what’s best for the health of the game. We will keep the comms open so that people can finish their threads in peace and view them later on.

As always, everyone is allowed to voice concerns and feedback, and especially feedback on whether you would return to a restructured game. We will be posting an official ic ending to the game on the 30th of June.

Thank you all for being so great and making Expiation such an amazing experience, we sincerely love you from the bottom of our hearts.

TEST DRIVE/MINGLE: HAPPY PROGRESS DAY

HAPPY PROGRESS DAY?

Well, as stated in the SOTG, there are some visitors from another town, Briorsea! The first week of the month they’re setting up some things at the event center, which look like a festival of sorts. If Chosen snoop, the visitors seem to be open about what they’re doing. They’re going to bring some culture to Aldrip, they say! They’re going to bring their advances to Aldrip, and you’re going to be part of it. They want to test what sort of talent you all have! Are you guys inventors? Do you know how to make anything at all? Anything and everything seems to interest them – so long as you can even hold a nail and a hammer, they’ll be encouraging you to build something. Stretch your mind! They seem to have brought a lot of materials and are okay with characters using them. You can ask in the comment below if you would like to know if they have something specific!

CUE MANIACAL LAUGHTER

Among the booths to make things, there’s obviously got to be a space to perform experiments! What has your character come up with? Please, experiment on another Chosen! They’ll even go so far as to drag volunteers in to match up with characters who want to do the experiments. It’s totally safe, promise. 100% will not end up a rat or get a new limb.

There’s also going to be a raffle for prizes in this, if you’re not really the inventing sort and still want in on the festivities. These prices will vary, but will mostly be in the form of blueprints and materials, as well as some other surprises as well. Comment below if you’d like to sign up!

A MEMORIAL

For those that aren’t interested in such a thing, Kotone and Scott are planning a memorial for those that have left Aldrip. More information will be coming in the form of a network post, but it will be included in the TDM as another form of mingling.

Hello all players of Expiation. The spring really came in like a wrecking ball and the mod team has noticed that the game has significantly slowed down during these past few months. We would like to get some further feedback which direction the game should go. The poll from March did give us a general idea of what the players might like, but we would love to hear in more detail what do you guys think works in the game and what doesn’t. Let’s get the conversation going! How are you feeling currently in the game? Are there mechanisms you’d want to implement in the game? What kind of events do you want to see more and what less. This also included general feedback towards the mod team.

With things slowing down and the game becoming smaller, the mod team has been considering shifting our focus to be more personalized towards the existing player base and characters. For an example: The mod team has plans for the upcoming months that would focus more on world exploration, which would allow characters to visit various places and other cities. If this is something that your character would be interested in, please let us know so we can start working on including them in the plot.

We originally planned this announcement to be part of the State Of The Game post that goes up on the weekend, but decided to bring this up now so that we can start the conversation as we move towards the summer's adventures.

Hey folks, due to a series of unexpected events, Kurama has taken over care of Astralin's Farm, so here is an update on that for those of you interested. Happy to expand on anything or answer questions.

1.) The biggest change is a bulletin board went up for Chosen to post notices! This is to facilitate characters hearing about or spotting things at the farm to direct their interest to the appropriate party. Lore info, business advertisements, public mingles or events.

The info post includes the farmhouse, farmland, onsen and new bed and breakfast. Please note the b&b has not been opened yet, I just didn't want to go back and edit the post later once that's finalized.

Edit: since this has been asked, please respond to the appropriate thread on the info post to share your character's information! ICly characters are welcome to post their own notices directly on the board or leave something with staff to be put up, if they'd rather do that.

For temporary notices like hosting an event, feel free to handwave something being posted rather than submit any info to the post. Mentioning that notices were put up at the farm during ooc plotting is sufficient!

2.) If you would like to know more about what's changing at the farm an info post is here, please utilize the space in any way you'd like.

- to list what animals your characters keep there
- mention if/when your character might be around
- information they may have available to share with others

While the land is available for anyone using it to expand on their training through Richard's boot camp, Kurama is not involved with the Defense Squad or going to be encouraging combat training on the property.

3.) Kurama had partnerships with Claude and Ethlyn regarding the Apothecary and Clinic. This was mostly intended as a no questions asked combination of efforts in times of need. The farm is generally a safe house during events and may also be used for extra storage or beds. How much or how little that remains is up to current owners of those properties, Kurama does work at the apothecary and volunteer through the clinic still.

4.) My hope is to use this as an opportunity for players to network getting characters together or fill in gaps regarding information sharing. It is meant to be a tool for all players to take advantage of regardless of association with Kurama. He is very hands off and tends to let people do their own thing and that will definitely apply here, most people will probably not know the difference between him as the current owner and anyone else volunteering or working there unless they ask or do some digging on their own.

There's been discussion about people not really knowing what's going on with others or what's available to them so my goal here has always been intended to help with being more proactive about what's available in the game. The way the farm currently runs will be preserved as much as possible. Everyone is free to use the resources and store any pets that require housing there, as they have been up until now. People who visit or help out on a volunteer basis are welcome to continue doing so or become official employees.

I'm already planning a woods/greenhouse mingle this month, but a farm mingle could be tentatively planned for next month or July if anyone is interested.

MAY EVENT SUMMARY

YOU’RE A SNAKE I CAN SEE IT IN YOUR FACE

All may seem quiet for a little while… but closer to the 12th, characters may notice snakes trying to get their attention in their day-to-day lives.

Break the sssystem.

Break the sssystem. The Garden awaitsss.

What do these snakes want? Why, they want characters to commit crimes – they can’t stop all of them, they say. If they overload the system with crimes, then surely it’ll break. Come to the Garden, they say. They’ll see everything and more. Steal, cheat, maim, kill. That’s just examples of the things they’ll tell the Chosen to do. But they must do these things to other Chosen– the locals don’t count. Once they commit these crimes, they get marked on the back of their hand. It’s a tattoo of a snake, of course.

Some snakes even give a target with a specific crime for them for an even bigger reward. This is an RNG portion of the event! There’s a TL DOWN HERE if you’d like to sign up! They may range from something silly to something serious, so please keep it in mind when signing up. These sign-ups will only last until the fifth, so we can RNG, give assignments, and give everyone a chance to plot.

THE GARDEN OF EDEN

Outside of Aldrip and deeper into the woods where very few go, there seems to be a very tall fence surrounding… something. Those that can fly can’t see inside. Those that can climb can’t climb over it. It’s almost as if something is obscuring it. Not an outright barrier, but there’s nothing to be made out if looking in from above. There’s just shapes. Those that try to force entry will get bitten by a snake and get very ill, and it’s up to the player on how ill they would get. There’s even a chance for character death here, as well, if they so desire. Chosen with their snake escorts with the tattoos on the back of their hands will find that the gates open for them easily, and they can step in. It smells cool and fresh when they get inside, and it really does look like paradise.

At least, for a moment.

Only a few minutes into characters being in the garden characters start to hallucinate bad endings. What’s the worst case scenario that could happen in their world? What’s their most feared outcome of what would happen here? Well, they’re seeing it. Visions of anything and everything that can go wrong will dominate their vision, as well as destruction of what appears to be other cycles. Will that happen to this cycle, at some point?

The snake escorts follow, still hissing into the Chosen’s ears.

Thisss is what happensss when the entity winsss. Destruction…

There is no good end for you, so long as the entity is “alive”.

THOSE NOT ENSNARED

The Chosen that don’t buy into the snake’s promises will be able to kill them in a traditional way. They’re just snakes, after all. Snakes can only tempt, but until the tattoo appears on the back of their hand, they still have the ability to “opt-out”. These Chosen may try to snap their fellows out of it, but once they get their tattoos, it’s really hard to convince them not to go into the Garden. In fact, in most cases, it’s downright impossible. Chosen attempted to be drawn away from the snakes may start screaming as if they’re in physical pain, or get combative. They really must get to the Garden, you see.

Oh, if only there was a McGuffin……..

APRIL TDM/MINGLE

TEST DRIVE/MINGLE: WE'RE NOT IN KANSAS ANYMORE

New characters on this TDM wake up in Rumpitur? It’s a smallish fishing and agricultural town, laid back but well taken care of. The people there are humanoid snakes, and while snakes may be intimidating usually, they’re actually pretty nice. They take these new Chosen happily, at least temporarily. They’ll give them shelter and food for basically free, or even in exchange for little errands around the village.

But beware of those from Aldrip, they say. They’re rude, brutal and they’ll leave anyone high and dry. Newbies may hear other gossip whispered amongst these creatures, which we’ll have a top-level for on what people would let characters hear about them. They may be true, or they may be untrue! Not everything in the rumor mill is bad, though. There’s gossip of an easier way to transport coming to link the two cities soon…

Oh, wait. There’s some of those people from Aldrip now. They were promised more resources for sale and for festivities. There’s nothing wrong with that at all. Nothing to worry about.

LOOK! IT’S… THE EASTER SNAKE?

At least newbies and oldies will be able to participate in their spring festivities. There will be an egg hunt, eggs as snacks and egg-themed snacks, and egg… races?? That’s not strange at all. Watch out for the eggs as snacks though – eating these will give characters an effect. There will be a rng for these effects, if you’d like to take a chance, but you can also bypass that and let choose what you’d like to play out.

The egg hunt is more productive, though. Characters will find items on the inside, both useful to take home to Aldrip for the rebuilding efforts (seeds for planting, etc), and useful personally. We’re pretty flexible to whatever can be found in these eggs, but remember they must be able to fit inside of these eggs.

AH, WELL THAT WAS FUN. NOW SHOO!

All of this will last --about a week before it seems like the people in Rumpitur seem to get a little tired of the Chosen’s existence. Too much partying, too many mouths to feed. They kindly offer to send them back to Aldrip, where the rest of the Chosen reside, and will lowkey even force characters on their wagon back if they have to. After all of those rumors and talking shit about Aldrip and the Chosen, it’s all fine. This is completely fine. Right?

Hello dear players. As promised here is the event aftermath info post. With this post the mod team wants to give characters (whether they took part to the actual event or not!) something to react to outside of all chaos and violence.

The Black Beast is dead. Hurray!!

However....

The most of the crops are still dead and the animals are still gone. The NPCs have started to come back out, but they’re very cautious and suspicious of the Chosen. They don’t seem to care to help with the recovery efforts, just that they pick through it and walk around it as if it doesn’t exist at all. NPC-run restaurants and food stores have started to close down, with a sign that says “NO INVENTORY” in the windows. At least the monsters are staying away for now, because they very well could have moved in while the chaos erupted.

Damages to Aldrip:

- A2

abandonware used her black box to fight the Black Beast, causing significant damage to the residential district, with damage more intense as a character walks out towards the edges of the city. It goes from various debris littering the streets and buildings, to parts of buildings being destroyed and caved in, to whole buildings being gone completely. Players may choose what happens to their homes, but anything uninhabited / NPC owned will have these effects.

chimericalclaw left a trail of half-disintegrated roads through the residential and commercial districts, leaving foundations to buildings completely missing or severely damaged, with the potential of collapse.

endcaller set fire to the commercial district and city center, with emphasis on the city center. Too bad he couldn’t get the courthouse though, right? That remains intact.
Kurama caused damage to the meadows and woods. He seemed to be the most level-headed of them all and just left the city entirely!

This is why we can't have nice things. Ragna, who is now banned from the month of March as a whole, had apparently been containing some big bad negative energy within his arm. He then stuck said arm into a crack in the simulation. This was fine, the first time, but seeing as how he then did it again...well, the arm is now considered lost. Unfortunately, the energy that was contained within his arm is no longer contained, and is leaking all over Aldrip. This energy summons forth a huge monster from Ragna's world: the Black Beast, a huge, many-headed serpent. This creature's many heads pop up all around the outskirts of Aldrip, making it impossible to leave. Strangely, though, they don't seem to come within the bounds of the city.

CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR
On the first day of its appearance, the Black Beast cannot be fought. Fauna didn't get this memo, unfortunately, so she goes to do what she does best: fight things. This ends in a terrible defeat. This might not be notable, except that Fauna is carrying a supply of "wish seeds" from her home world, and these seeds become infused with the Black Beast's negative energy. These seeds scatter across the city of Aldrip.

So...what do the seeds do? They turn people into monsters, and anyone in town can be affected by them. These monster transformations can be whatever players want, and can come with temporary powers as well, with the caveat that the theme of the transformation has something to do with a "wish" that the character has. (As an example, perhaps a character who wishes to stay with their friends has the power to absorb energy from people who get close to them. )

In a bid to apologize for every March he's perpetrated, Ragna elects to fuse with the Black Beast, thus negating its invulnerability and making it killable. And it must be killed to stop the negative energy from affecting Aldrip. These heads can be killed by any physical or magical means

If the Black Beast is defeated, it'll stop more Chosen from transforming into monsters. However, Chosen who have already transformed will not change back if the Black Beast is defeated. How do they do so, then? By reconciling the "wish" that was part of their transformation in some way -- either major or minor. (To follow the same example above, a character might accept that they must let go of people who leave, thus triggering their de-transformation.)
