No Cloud obsession for your benefit! I didn't want you to feel like Cloud suddenly had a stalker either. But we can certainly throw them at each other any time, Seph would like to know what his cell colony is up to these days. The biggest reason for his canon point was to let him keep his memories, honestly. In a game about character analysis him still remembering his mortal life seemed more interesting.

Edit: Oh! I forgot to mention that I know Cloud was investigating the disappearances. Sephiroth was luring people into the woods and I'm sure some folks talked about that. So if you want Cloud to be suspicious of him at all we can build off that. Up to you!
