State of the Game - April 2023

STATE OF THE GAME — OOC

Much gratitude to the playerbase. It has been a very interesting two and a half months in terms of how this game has come to be and the direction that we are beginning to steer it into. Every game has an adjustment period, which is precisely what we are experiencing now and anticipate to continue doing so any time we add something new. Thank you for sticking it out as we proceed to cross hurdles, fine tune schedules, and overall attempt to build this into what we have envisioned it to be.

As we have received some very enlightening feedback over the last day or so, please see the below as we address various points in attempts to clarify anything that may be befuddling to the player base and how we intend to proceed forward as a result of these notes that have been brought to light. We had meant to do this on Friday, however, felt that the current circumstance warrants an immediate addressing of situation.

Expiation Premise & End Game
Originally, the concept behind Expiation was that players and characters alike would, over time, pick out the various clues that were inserted into the events, string them together, and figure out what was actually at play. We have not had nearly enough events to actually make that a reality and as it seems already that will cause too much confusion or otherwise be a hassle, we have decided to entirely eliminate that idea and therefore below will generally detail the actual storyline of Expiation and what is happening. This will alleviate the need for players to go over event details with a fine-tooth comb or expend an excess of effort.

All characters in Expiation are being tested. Every single event, every single miniature event, just about every single thing that characters come up against is a test, including anything to do with NPCs in the world. We will not reveal the source of this test or the reasoning for it, as we feel this should be more than adequate information for players to understand that the goal and concept for characters is to discover they're being tested and to establish the source of that.

Parchment / sentencing is also a test, evaluation, assessment, however you would like to put it and falls into the above category. You may also liken the parchment / sentencing and events to concepts like trial and tribulation. We reiterate that the parchment / sentencing mechanic will not be introduced until June of 2023. When it is introduced, players will be allowed to submit characters of choice for 'trial' and must detail whether they prefer a positive, neutral, or negative outcome. The details on how these will work will come more into play come June. Since it will be the first time we are introducing this mechanic, we expect to have more fine-tuning on this process, and do not anticipate that it will be a flawless or perfect integration.

The themes of assessment are not just for characters to literally be tested, but also for characters to assess themselves. Characters are put into deliberate adversity because they are being studied. Their reactions, their motivations, how they respond to hardship, how they respond to others during hardship, and related are all being closely monitored. All future events tie into how characters respond, which means that they will face additional adversities to continue that monitoring.

Every character in Expiation is a guinea pig.

Crimes
There appears to be an assumption that all characters who come to this world are criminals, which is not accurate. As stated above, the parchment accusing characters of crimes is a test to see how characters respond to it. Whether they agree. Whether they disagree. Whether they are inspired to reflect on a crime they may have committed back home, or if they never committed that crime to begin with, but somehow are fully capable of doing so and have simply chosen not to.

This very likely sounds complicated, so hopefully this will simplify matters some. Whether or not your character has committed a crime does not mean that character is necessarily free from self-reflection. Most characters have done something or said something that they experience an amount of regret for. Some characters do not fall into this category and are unapologetic about actions they have taken, regardless of the reasoning.

Repentant or not, self-reflection is a part of discovery and potential change in an individual.

Please do not get distracted by the notion of crimes or thinking that all characters have to commit crimes or that they even would. We expect players to play their respective characters in a manner that would be IC and befitting of them per the obstacles that they come up against.

To add onto this:
Any event that contains the ability to execute criminal behaviour is done with the idea in mind that either another character has the option to stop or otherwise hinder them, or that it may potentially be IC for that character to commit such an action. If your character wouldn't do this, you don't need to use the prompt.

Rumpitur is a good example of this. The thought process behind offering that prompt was not profound or meant to be complicated. It was to either stop people who were inclined to steal food or materials, or for characters to look at it through the lens of "why pay for something when I can get it for free?" It also would have applied to any character who perhaps has kleptomania tendencies or simply was bored and wanted to deliberately make trouble.

Pacing & Schedule
As it has been stated, events will be bimonthly. We have no plans to change this. To have a repetitious stream of events would be unfair and unrealistic to both the player base and to the moderator team in terms of time and energy that is required to make that happen. We have already updated our Info / FAQ page to reflect that if you require to have a consistent feed of information and action, this game may not suit your tastes. That said, the schedule for this is going to be Event, TDM, Event, TDM, Event, TDM, Event, TDM, and so on.

The TDM will always include prompts that will tie into the next event, for the sake of integration and to keep things strung together. This is to provide players and characters already in the game the opportunity to explore these possibilities and provide additional ideas on what to do during event aftermath or 'downtime.'

With our current application / reserve cycle being what it is, that doesn't qualify at present because we're adjusting going from a monthly TDM to a bimonthly opposite of event months. You can expect the next TDM at the end of May 2023 to include prompts that will tie into the July event and we would encourage players already in the game to use those prompts in monthly catch-alls or closed logs with other characters.

As we understand this may still not be enough for players or that may be too much 'freedom,' we are willing to provide very, very miniature socialising occasions (read: 1 or 2 prompts) for every non-event month, if that is what the player base would like.

State of the Game & FAQ
A State of the Game will be provided every single month, regardless of whether it is an event month or not. Event month SotG will consist of poll results, changes made to the world, rewards provided for good behaviour, punishments provided for bad behaviour, or whatever the results of that month's event poll would consist of.

On non-event months, the State of the Game will include points of interest, player plots potentially going on, and other like ideas that players can add to by commenting to the State of the Game post and letting the rest of the community know what they're getting involved in. This will require the player base to be proactive about sharing what characters are doing. (For instance, Peter wants to lead an excavation into the Lorentia Caves or Zack wants to start up an officially recognised guard for Aldrip. This is not an exhaustive list of examples, merely a couple.)

Both types of months will also include new information from the FAQ that we would find potentially useful for all of the player base, which the moderator team will provide, as we do not expect the players to keep an eye on the FAQ or what is being asked there. Whilst we will not create a compendium of SotGs, we will tag every single one of these for convenient reference should players need to revisit them at any time.

Furthermore, both types of months will also give you an idea about what the moderator team would like to integrate in the future from both OOC and IC standpoints. (i.e., we have plans of hosting a future event that will provide all characters personal housing)

Events & Polls
As we have eliminated the need for players to do any kind of sleuthing, we feel it should make it a little bit easier to recognise the different parts of prompts that may / will lead to future events should they be explored and pursued. We will also clarify from a moderator standpoint more on these event prompts and how they will impact the future of the game. Although this clarification may not be greatly detailed on the initial event post, the monthly SotG that will follow 1 week after the event post will provide more and greater detailed information depending on the results of the poll.

The poll will be posted the same day as the event post in the OOC community and will be tagged accordingly. 1 week after the event and the poll posts go up, there will be a SotG addressing the results per the poll. As we had multiple players who did things outside of the 1st event's prompts and did not realise they could specify these outliers in comments to the poll post, in the future, all polls will have an option for Other, requiring you to link to a comment made to the poll's post of what your character did, so that we can take all actions into consideration.

'Downtime' & the World
Expiation is a huge continent with lots of things to look at and explore. We encourage players should they desire to, to travel outside of Aldrip. Try to go through the desert and potentially fail. Try to get a ship to take you down to the Ruins of Forlinet and go treasure hunting. We have always opened the door to players asking us about what is within the realm of possibility and we want to continue to foster that habit. If you are seeking to make a big change to the world, ask the moderator team. If you want to have a hunting for sport adventure, you don't need to ask about that. Consider the relative size of what you want to do and if it would potentially affect the world.

We have had players who've been very good and very respectful about not traipsing on things that we might want to use for future events. As we have a plethora of event ideas that we can explore, we do not want to restrain the player base. If you have something you really want to do, simply bring it up to the moderator team and the chances are that we will be able to make it a reality. We are not really limiting where you can go or what you can do, for the most part (some exceptions may apply). In a way, that could be considered 'freeform,' and it may be intimidating. We encourage and expect you to be creative and innovative, and to make your own plots to fill in extra time that may not already be included with TDM, miniature events / socialising opportunities, and so on. You have the resources available to you.

STATE OF THE GAME — IC

Many thanks to all players / characters who took place in the poll for the first event. Please see below for an idea of how the results panned out and what those results mean for the world as a whole and characters.

Poll Results

• We have discovered that there aren't many of us who know how to repair refrigeration units. Aldrip will not be primarily relying on any characters in Expiation at this time to help with maintenance of local machinery or technology. They were eventually repaired by the locals, though likely with a good deal of muttering and berating remarks spoken under the breath.

• Many characters had / have an interest in cooking, or may simply be good at it. In short, overwhelmingly (but not surprising), the Chosen have had no issues in keeping everyone fed whilst the refrigeration units were being repaired. This may be due to the number of people who hunted wild game, learned how to otherwise preserve food, or other related things. Thank you very much for all of your service. You've done great things for Aldrip's survival.

• The Rumpitur people were caught off guard by the sudden appearance of Aldrip locals. Although they are aware that some of their items were stolen, it was not so much in abundance that it has harmed the relationship between Aldrip and Rumpitur. The Chosen who make visit to Rumpitur may not be welcomed with open arms, but they are very willing to share information about the world, their people, and their traditions. This has been a most effective means of opening the door to diplomatic relations. Furthermore, should Aldrip find itself in trouble again, Rumpitur will come to her aid.

• A great number of people witnessed strange things happening in Pessiria Forest, so perhaps there's more truth to those rumours and folklore than the locals have been insisting there is. As a result, in tandem with the number of people who noticed they were missing others on their way back to Aldrip, the council of elders in the town has no choice but to instate an official investigation on the missing. This may be a slower process, but it will, in fact, begin, and the Aldrip locals would like the Chosen to spearhead that investigation, be it in one large group or multiple groups. This will consist of information gathering, more expeditions into Pessiria, and studying of the other disappearances. This will unlock additional exposure to previously hidden archives that Aldrip was keeping from the Chosen where they will discover the more gruesome details about those who have gone missing, the number, and so on.

The above leads to the next upcoming event, which will involve players who would like to volunteer their characters for branding ceremonies, abduction, mind control, possession, and other related possibilities. More information on this will be available on our next CR Meme, where we will provide a space for players to offer their characters with greater detail on what to expect from the event and how it will impact those volunteered and not volunteered.

• Thirty-two of you out there wanted your character to suffer, so in tandem with the above, we will be putting a cap on how many characters will be accepted for this specific part of the event. Basically, what we're saying is all thirty-two of you are masochists.

But Wait, There's More!

Aldrip is incredibly thankful to each and every Chosen who helped gather food, make food, and met with the people of Rumpitur in an effort to represent the town in a good and positive light. As a result, Aldrip has started construction on a very special place not far from the main town, consisting of a botanical garden and modestly-sized statues of each Chosen, engraved with name and title of Saviour of Aldrip.

In addition, due to the complication that arose because refrigeration units were previously restricted to those Aldrip felt needed them, Aldrip has provided and installed miniature refrigeration units for every single Chosen in Aldrip. Hopefully, if they should fail again, it will not be all of them at the same time.

Notes from the FAQ + Other

To make this simplest, we will be bullet pointing certain information that came up in the FAQ, which pertains to the world, potentially the people, and other things we feel that the player base as a whole would benefit from knowing. We will be including bullet points for certain things we as a moderator team would like to integrate in the future.

Curiosities
• Books on Expiation's history will contain a great deal of folklore surrounding the different landmarks of the continent, the ocean, the isles that linger across the ocean, and more. We have a few examples of these on the world page, such as the curse that controls the Pessiria Forest, the history of the sinking of the Ruins of Forlinet, the sketchy past of the Tower of Narbeth, and so on, but there's implied to be a great number more and the people of Expiation enjoy their stories.

These same records can be located on their simple computers and though they don't have an internet per se, they do keep digital and physical archives detailing this information, in addition to what they claim to know on other cities, peoples, and their corresponding traditions. In many cases, there is not likely to be a wealth of knowledge on these, and that will change as we go through events. (Please note that as a result of our first event, more archives are now available to the Chosen.)

Any of the information on the world page at current is information that all players and characters can assume is mostly common and likely spoken of on the main continent.

• Regarding charms: there isn't a 'username' or other means of identification, so one could theoretically pose as someone they are not, or be anonymous. That is entirely within the realm of possibility at this time. The same cannot be said for voice or video (unless someone is able to change how they sound or their appearance).

The individual charms given for this communication is actually capable of more than what the Aldrip citizens are familiar with since they tend to use it for more simpler conversations. It does have the capacity for a privacy or filter setting, however, members of the Chosen would have no reason to be aware of that.

That said, if someone who's particularly technologically savvy were to go poking around with it further, or even someone who simply had a lot of time of their hands was experimenting with its capabilities, they would likely eventually stumble onto that discovery and could share it with the others using it.

• There are a great number of horses, both domestic and wild located in and around Aldrip.

• Regarding charms and the NPC presence on the network: Aldrip citizens will occasionally use the same mechanism to announce various things (upcoming events, anything dire like particularly dangerous animals locals may need to keep an eye out for, requests and subsequent rewards, and related). The likelihood, however, is that the Chosen will use this community posting more. Aldrip locals are more probable to communicate with one another in the town directly if they are having business propositions, mercantile deals, trades, and so on.

You are free to assume that interspersed between our collective of Chosen being disoriented and trying to get a grasp on the situation, there are, in fact, posts made by the locals. It should be noted that the Aldrip locals will not respond to Chosen posts, but players are free to handwave communication with the townsfolk directly, provided they continue to do so responsibly.

• Regarding injuries and the local clerics: Something that is an extensive injury will require some recovery time, but may, for the most part, be largely taken care of upon treatment. The clerics of Aldrip use a combination of traditional (salves, potions, bandaging), holistic (ritual, prayer), and simple technological (foreign-looking contraptions that probably don't make sense to the objective eye) means to address injuries.

Play with these possibilities as you would like to. Whatever would make sense for the circumstance in question. For instance, if your characters has a broken bone, they may need some additional time for recovery and should take care not to excessively use it or strain it as it heals, but they would likely be able to avoid the need for a cast, splint, or related. A stab wound, or something akin to, would likely depend on depth, where it punctured, any additional damage it might have done, and other information like that.

The Chosen may not hear much information from the members of the clergy that differs too much from what else they've encountered so far. They're very dedicated to Those Who Were There and answer directly to the theocratic leaders of the town. They may even be considered a bit overly passionate about their devotion, but it is unlikely the Chosen will glean much useful from them.

Imagine them being very free with their praise regarding their beliefs and just how great they think Those Who Were There truly are and how everyone should love them in much the same way.

• Regarding more about charms: The charms are designed to be not overly burdensome in an effort to offer incentive to hold onto them and form the routine to keep them on one's person. If one were not to be carrying it and they encountered someone who didn't speak the 'common' tongue feasibly, then it would stand to reason it'd be difficult to colloquially communicate.

That said, the best way to learn a foreign language is to immerse one's self in it, so if people like the challenge, they could always leave their charms behind intentionally.

Something else to consider is that it's the possession of the charm that affects a character's interpretation of a language (written or verbal). That said, if one character didn't have their charm, but whoever they were speaking with did, then the lack of understanding would be somewhat one-sided.

• Regarding other religions: For all that Aldrip (and the continent as a whole) is deeply devoted to Those Who Were There, they will not attempt to convert others into becoming believers or turning from their own faith. If anything, they will be curious to learn about other faiths and like details.

• Regarding maps: Getting a map of the continent and its surroundings is not a particularly difficult endeavour. Whether you're purchasing one for your own use (which is easily available by many of the merchants in Aldrip), or if you want to use a public one for perusal, both methods are available. Many of the locals keep the maps on them as Aldrip will occasionally get visitors from some of the other towns and cities.

• Regarding housing [at present]: Aldrip is quickly coming to realise that inn rooms cannot possibly continue to accommodate the Chosen and the locals will eventually be keen to build a modest residential sector for them. (Other potential includes the ability for characters to acquire their own materials and perhaps make use of the meadowlands that are right outside of Aldrip, though with the caveat that is moving in on territory that belongs to wild animals and is largely untouched.)

• Regarding indoor plumbing: It exists. Other appliances that exist are: refrigerators, washing machines, dryers. (Anything outside of this may still need to be inquired about.) Caveat is as follows: all of these appliances, aside from indoor plumbing (so loos / bathing chambers / WCs) and refrigeration units are communal. This means the community of Aldrip shares washing and drying appliances. That said, most of the locals don't use the washer / drying mechanisms and attend to their garb in a more traditional fashion of river cleaning and hanging.

• Regarding local clothing, garb habits, and game time period: In time period approximations, span from about the 18th century to [and we put this loosely due to technological advancements, not necessarily apparel] a late 1980s / early 1990s atmosphere. We ask that this be considered very general and not specific.

For instance, garb-wise you may find that some of the people in Aldrip choose to wear petticoats, leather and vellum shoes, justaucorps, waistcoats, breeches, and so on. You may also find some who are wearing very simple cloth trousers, or soft leathers. You won't find locals wearing denim, tight leathers, or spandex types of apparel (i.e., bodysuits and related).

This isn't to say that the locals will not potentially attempt to recreate some of the textiles that the Chosen are arriving with, but by default, what most of the Chosen are coming in with (leather jackets, jeans, midriff baring tops, halter tops, and so on, depending on canon time period), is probably not native to Expiation peoples, traditions, and cultures.

In general, you're not going to find a lot of what we as people use today. No RGB headsets. No gaming consoles. No multi-monitor computer setups. No server rooms. You're also not going to find [naturally occurring] anything excessively futuristic. No time machines. No weather machines.

• Regarding voice-to-text for the charms: The Speech-to-Text of the charms is substantially better than what we in our contemporary day experience (so likely less probability of some strange auto correct). Since the charms also act as a universal language translator, it is programmed to use and recognise what would be consider words at their most proper. That said, it is a device that can and will learn from its users to better adapt and make it easier for Chosen to adapt, so a charm can take on the habits of its users, which does mean picking up verbal tics (i.e. mornin' versus morning). That said, since it can't differentiate between 'you' and 'u,' even if someone means to say 'u,' it will still come out as 'you.' The same would apply to other words that today we use shorthand for.

• Regarding properties for rent: At the present, no! That said, it would be feasible, with materials, necessary funding and assistance from Chosen / Aldrip locals, that one would could build their own home. There's a decent amount of flatland around Aldrip and in the immediate nearby areas, so there is space for additional residences.

• Regarding the world of crime in Expiation: Without a doubt there are more unscrupulous types in Expiation and certainly not just in Aldrip, but also other settlements, and even more vagabond types who may come and go. So yes, there is likely to be some peddling of some kind. Details on this will be sparse and we're not planning to go into much more than that, but you're free to liken it to a fantasy varieties of what we have, simulated depressants, hallucinogens, stimulants, and so on.

Other types of crime can include (but is not excluded to) forgeries, embezzling, and many of the things we would be familiar with in the real world. Chosen can also do these things, though like with most actions in the game, this will probably have repercussions at some point, and those repercussions may affect all of the Chosen, not just the ones committing said crimes. There is no rule stating Chosen can't commit crimes. Our game info has limited detailing on how crimes are handled and that's largely on a case-by-case basis, but if someone's committing crimes that they should probably be caught for, it would be a good idea to notify the moderator team, so we can address that when it should arise.

• Regarding the Aldrip libraries: Right now the information on Those Who Were There is information publicly available via conversation with the locals, books, and electronic archives / records.

Other information on Those Who Were There includes that they are responsible for the sinking of Forlinet, a kingdom that existed down southeast of the main continent, which can be seen from the shoreline by Rumpitur and Ketsora. They are considered a 'loving' and 'kind' sect of beings, since they seem to make sure that Aldrip and other Expiation residents do not suffer needlessly. There are no records of proof citing direct intervention, so the religion is truly reliant on faith rather than more solid demonstration.

They are described as an enigmatic race of beings, though it is stated they've never been seen or heard in the recent ages. There is, in fact, no official record of having ever seen or heard one prior. If asked how the locals know the technological devices have been left behind by them, the locals will not give a direct answer. This is largely because they don't have an answer to that and don't want their faith to be questioned or challenged.

There are no unkind things to be found on them and some of the texts may imply a bit of zealotry.

More information about them will be uncovered as we travel through the game's overarching storyline.

• Regarding weaponry available in Aldrip: Contemporary guns are a little too new for the locals. That said, it doesn't mean they won't be able to make those in the future with some assistance / information from the Chosen.

It is more likely that one will find swords, polearms, axes, bows / arrows, crossbows, maces, flintlock pistols, and other related dated weapons by default. They also make things like boomerangs and slingshots.

As they have ships for traversing the waters, it is implied that they have the makings for additional artillery like canons, so it is only a matter of time before such things become more commonplace and accessible.

• Regarding school systems: Education tends to be a simple, at-home experience for the Aldrip locals. There is no official school system or curriculum at this time.

• Regarding the age demographic of Aldrip locals: You could consider there's a fairly wide range of ages. There are probably more adolescents than there are young children, if that helps. (But who knows. Maybe the Aldripians will be keen on getting busy or something at some point.)

Future Ideas...
• We would like to open the Lorentia Caves for exploration. Yes, there are dragons. Yes, you can slay some of them. Please keep some of them alive for us for a future event. Also, Sephiroth lives in here somewhere.

• We have future event plans where the inn in Aldrip is destroyed, forcing Aldrip to provide all members of the Chosen with their own households.

• We would like to incorporate the settlement of Ketsora and the harpy people in an upcoming event or TDM.

• We would like to explore more of the desert and its unforgiving climes and history.

• We would like to explore the notion of piracy taking place on the Talion Sea by the Ruins of Forlinet.

• That's just a few. We have more in mind that we'll share in the future.

The End

That was a lot, right? If you made it this far, congratulations. You can't imagine how long it took us to write it all up.

As ever, we encourage you to ask questions about things you may not be certain of, but don't be afraid to take some creative liberties and to take advantage of the world that we have built and given to you.

Thank you again for your support and for being a part of the game. We look forward to seeing you again on the next State of the Game.

I've gotta tweak some of the questions I was originally gonna ask (probs over the next day or so) but I wanted to ask about something that stood out to me here first;

"Thirty-two of you out there wanted your character to suffer, so in tandem with the above, we will be putting a cap on how many characters will be accepted for this specific part of the event. Basically, what we're saying is all thirty-two of you are masochists."

I may be reading this wrong (long work day be long), but does this mean that those of us who didn't vote on that part of the poll will be unable to throw our lots into this event segment?

Thank you for explaining this! I can't even recall if I answered the poll or not on account of my laptop keyboard breaking around the time the poll went up, so this is reassuring. And I'm super excited for the event!

If people exploring Lorentia Cave go to any super deep tunnels and get too close to Sephiroth's lair he'll start bombarding with them illusions.

I kinda figure it would be hard to just stumble into his lair by accident but I wanted to offer illusion shenanigans if people wanted to play with them (and mods are down for it!).

Other than that, I hope we can get some sleuthing and mystery as things go forward. I understand that figuring out the main premise may have been a lot but I personally love mysteries if there are still story/setting things the cast can learn.

Of course! I will always check in and communicate with folks.

Sephiroth's illusions and psychic powers were inherited from Jenova's Mimic ability which (overly long FFVII nonsense here) and involves reading memories. The memory read is usually portrayed as passive. I'm interpreting this as Seph can project illusions that can really mess with people by showing them things from their past BUT Sephiroth himself might not consciously know what those things are. This is all a long-winded way of saying I smell potential mini-plots or inter-player nonsense with this that don't necessarily need to have Sephiroth directly involved. I want other players to feel free to get spooked and mess with their characters in the deepest depths of the cave and never know he's there if that's their preference.

I'd really like to thank you guys for writing this, and for taking the time to go over the points we brought out, and listening to our concerns as well! It provided great answers and great solutions, and I'm very, very excited to see what the future holds!

Thank you mods, for writing up all this info. It's super reassuring for someone like me who just apped in last month and felt a bit lost on a variety of things (on top of having tech difficulties that have made engaging in the game difficult). I'm excited to see what's to come!

hello mods!

thank you so much, first of all, and apologies if this is already answered somewhere and i missed it. i come a few days late, but i am wondering how fast we can anticipate construction of the garden + savior statues will happen? is it every character regardless of whether they actually helped with the situation or not?

and can they be destroyed or otherwise vandalized? asking for mizuki maybe :')
