Location preference? Desert or ruins, he's got that Fleet survival training. Also hey, good to have a doctor on any team!
Technical knowledge? Yes, although– he maintains his own super-tech-y medical equipment, has the know-how to reprogram a medical tricorder, and can work his way through an unfamiliar system/download/upload data if instructed. Yadda yadda not an engineer, but he is still a science officer.
