INTRO / CR MEME
INTRO / CR MEME
Welcome to Expiation and come on down! We're thrilled to have you here, new and old players alike. Please note that this intro entry serves additionally as a CR meme, so you are free to use it to say hello, tell us a bit about yourself, talk about your character, and potential plans for the game.
As a reminder, Expiation runs on bi-monthly events. Please note that all characters accepted in April are exempt from the April AC. For everyone else, please submit your AC by April 30th, 2023. We will provide a warning list halfway through the day (eastern time) on both the OOC community and the moderator plurk.
As a kind reminder for people who are using backdated threads as proofs, we are counting the number of comments from April. Please make sure your counts are correct. Last month we didn't penalise anyone for that because we had multiple people and thought it was not communicated properly by the moderator team. This month, that will not happen. We will sweep anyone who fails to meet AC due to miscounted comments.
For our new players, we encourage you to read the Premise and End Game section of our April 2023 State of the Game, as it includes behind-the-scenes information for players. There's also a wide array of other information on that entry available for the curious.
To give you a general idea of how the upcoming timeline will be... (Please stay tuned. We're currently developing an actual calendar that we will update monthly and leave available on a separate page for the sake of player ease. It's not available yet, however.)

EVENT #2 NOTES
EVENT NOTES: OVERVIEW: We warn ahead of time that some of the content in this event may be uncomfortable or disturbing. We especially would caution reading the 4th arrow below. We will mark it. ► This event is spurred by the Pessiria Forest disappearances and phenomena, observations of strange happenstance, and those now experiencing nightmares or visions from Event #1. ► People who have been plagued by nightmares and visions during Event #1 will have mysterious arcane, runic, and related marks (read: brands) appear on their body. The location is player choice and may be singular or multiple. Feel free to be creative in the details of their appearance (read: colour, size, and so on). Those marked will be subject to a variety of afflictions or situations—abductions (see our additional notes section), demonic or spiritual possession, mind control, a mysterious ability to cast elemental or blood magicks whether they normally can or can't, incoherent speech or perhaps no speech at all, and so on. (If you don't like any of those options and want to suggest others, please do so in the Moderator Team Comment below.) ► People who are not suffering from having visions or nightmares will be especially vulnerable to the new abilities and afflictions, specifically should those they know be under this condition. This could be due to bonds of friendship, familial, romantic, or any other kind of relationship. They do not need to be extraordinarily emotionally close to the afflicted for this to take effect. This means these people who are not afflicted will be more susceptible to mind control and will feel inclined to serve or defend their known party in question. ► POTENTIALLY DISTURBING CONTENT. The missing NPCs from Event #1 will initially remain missing. In Pessiria Forest when travelling deep enough and guided by those who are marked, they will locate a bizarre clearing and a variety of stone monuments. Included amongst these strangely-shaped monuments, they will find tablets that contain writing in a [currently] undecipherable language (to be used in future events and eventually discovered). At the centre of this collection of monuments is a pit cave and upon travelling through this winding cave, the abducted NPCs will be found in a central cavernous room where they have been kept in terrible condition for gory experimentation and sacrifice. ► The abductions and strange phenomena of the forest, and presumably prior disappearances, is being controlled by a collective in mysterious robed garb with similar arcane and runic markings as those branded. The Chosen will not be able to fight them yet (see the additional notes section). Instead, they will conjure a creature eldritch in appearance with rock, crystal, and tree root traits. ► The people who are branded will be thralls to the creature should they be present at this combat. They will be compelled to protect the creature, requiring the attention to be divided between the creature in question and any branded who are protecting it. You can use this as an opportunity to fight the creature or to fight with your fellow Chosen. ► When the creature is in its last moments, the consequences of defeating it will cause it to flail its appendages, resulting in an imminent collapse of the pit cave's interior. People will need to help the branded, the unbranded, and the NPCs escape the pit cave before its total cave-in. ADDITIONAL NOTES: ► We are putting a numerical cap on how many Chosen can be a part of the marked / afflicted. After all, if everyone is marked, then no-one can be saved and we need some heroes. We will accept 20 sign ups for this. This is not a first-come, first-served situation. We encourage all interested parties to volunteer their character and a week from today (April 26), we will RNG from everyone who has signed up. Please note two things in relation to the above: 01. If you play multiple characters, only one is eligible to be drawn (unless for some reason we're short on volunteers). 02. As we would like to spread the opportunity for special signs up across all characters, please note that all characters who win this specific event sign up cannot be entered into the next event sign up that we have. ► Abduction options are also available for Chosen whose players may have extenuating circumstances that prevent them from being immediately involved, may be on hiatus at the time, or simply choose to have this option available to them. If chosen, players may have their characters be abducted for a few days at most (at which they would mysteriously find themselves back in Aldrip, unable to explain what happened, or how they got there). There is also an option to have them abducted through the entirety of the event as well. Whatever is most convenient for the player and their circumstance. ► The side effects from the branding / marks can be nullified when another person demonstrates an act of selflessness for the benefit of the afflicted. For instance, risking one's life for another's would qualify. Do not treat that as an exclusive option. It is only an example. It will not remove the mark itself, but it will remove the statuses that can be caused by the marking. ► Players may choose from multiple status effects if they have a branded character. They may also choose a singular status or ability that they would like to have. There are no limits here, save common courtesy and communication with your thread partners. ► The mysterious collective of sorcerers / magicians are not eligible for combat in this event. Anyone attempting to combat them will find that no abilities are capable of making contact. They will make a future return at some point involving the so-called defunct Tower of Narbeth, so expect to see them again. ► It is presumed that the Chosen will ultimately thwart the designs of the cave and the tree, root, crystal creature. It is also presumed that all Chosen will emerge from the cave-in alive. If your character should die for any reason, please contact us. Any injured Chosen can seek the assistance of local healers or the clerics in Aldrip. ► Those with brands will find that their marks will disappear within a few weeks after the event has started. If there are Chosen who, for some reason, wish to keep their marks, a Rumpiturian will pay visit to Aldrip around the time the brands begin to fade and offer to tattoo these markings permanently in exchange for town materials and supplies. ► The successful triumph over the cave creature and rescue of NPCs, in addition to getting to the bottom of the Pessiria Forest mystery and debunking some of the world's folklore, will merit rewards being given to the Chosen. (These rewards are still being considered, but will be addressed in the State of the Game in May, one week after the event has gone up.) ► We would like to give a reminder that just because there may not be a prompt for it, doesn't mean it's unacceptable. It is entirely feasible that someone would be inclined to take advantage of the chaos going on to otherwise cause more chaos, do some sleuthing around Aldrip, the forest, or whatever have you. If you are interested in doing something that isn't directly correlating to the event, contact the moderator team to discuss. Remember if you do something outside of the prompt options on the OOC poll on the day that it is posted, please leave a comment detailing what you did and link to it, so we can take all actions into consideration for the next State of the Game. |

Anything Else?: Hello, I'm Tea! I'm in EST land, but work mostly overnight reception at a vet clinic so my hours are a bit weird. My interests include tarot/oracle cards, horror of all kinds, Critical Role, Marvel 616 (mostly Iron Man), all folklore (tons of folklore), and a variety of weird anime that usually involve youkai, cooking, or some combination of the two. Also some random Cdramas and Kdramas, usually mystery/suspense and supernatural. I am primarily a night beast.
Character: Wen Kexing
Canon: Word of Honor
Canon Point: episode 31, when Wen Kexing is on his way to rescue Zhou Zishu from Jin's prison.
Crime: Failing and abandoning his people. Technically he is leader of the miserable outcasts and terrible criminals of Mount Qingya, but he does not accept this. Fuck 'em.
Background: When Wen Kexing was a kid, his family got mixed up in a political conflict by volunteering to hide the series' McGuffin, which got his parents killed and got him thrown into the abandoned land called the Valley of Ghosts, named because only those who were dead to society lived there. He was raised among violence and self-serving schemes until he got his revenge by killing the chief of ghosts and taking over. Then he spent almost all of the next decade hating the noble groups that put him there, so he decided why NOT go for bonus revenge? Except the civilized world is really full of hot guys and he met someone and adopted a second kid, so. Best laid plans.
He's kind of a meatball anyway so his plan wasn't great to start with.
Abilities:
- wuxia kung fu master with a deep qi well, so he can do fantasy style martial techniques
- violent, unpredictable style that tends toward brutality
- ability to use a variety of weapons, including makeshift random items
- rudimentary medical/herbal studies thanks to his healer background
- magical flute skills and some decent cooking! The most important skills.
Plans:
For the event part, Wen Kexing is kind of neutral, so he isn't super invested in saving anyone from monsters. He will gladly fight just for fighting's sake, though so if anyone wants to have characters work within the chaos he could be muscle, or play with mind control or whatnot, I'm interested.
General: I would love Wen Kexing to get more combat moments. Sparring (he plays very rough, though), fighting monsters, finding pirates and bandits and starting a small conquest of them, treasure hunts, whatever! I'm going to have him look into rumored dangerous areas and follow up on stories to go further out in the world, so anyone interested in that would be great CR. Rivals would also be good, although he is extremely violent and because of his background does tend to go for actual murder first, friendly foe second or even eighth. That said, if the vibes are good he's a loud, reactive basically murderous version of a shounen protagonist so CR that can tease him or compete with him is something I love. But it would have to be bloodshed-friendly since he is an actual murdering warlord, and being evenly matched would be necessary. However, partners for crimes, general troublemaking, or more peaceful talks are always welcome! He needs to learn more medicine and poison techniques.
???:
Character: Abe no Seimei
Canon: original
Canon Point: modern times, after his last "disappearance"
Crime: Destroying the world. So it turns out when you use all your exes' resources to cut humanity off from spiritual powers they get so pissed no one talks about it? And that's the one thing no one else blames you for! Cue being accused of anything else.
Background: Born as the son of a celestial fox and a human government official, Seimei grew up making many different kinds of friends. He unfortunately also learned how many problems came from complicated clashes between humans and spirits and their many different priorities. So he decided that the best way to solve it was to make more friends--big friends in high places. He became famous as the most powerful onmyouji in the world by making connections across the country, building alliances with deities and youkai of all kinds, until he had a reputation for being able to do practically anything. Both worshipped and hated by humans and otherworldly entities, Seimei mostly used his connections and onmyoudou skills to mediate and resolve issues. He found it difficult to escape his wild reputation even though his own power was average, and his personal relationships were always strained by what he might use his network of contracts for.
Which turned out to be somewhat true. When humans began to expand further and further, using magic and connections to the supernatural to aid in their different goals, more creatures feeding on malicious energy gained power. Seeing that negative spirits had the most guaranteed gain, Seimei used all of his built up connections to break the ties between the human world and spirit world. This caused a temporary rift between humans and magic leading to decades of magical drought for humans and disrupting many key sources of power for spirits and deities. Even after the gap began to close and everything healed, things were left permanently changed and Seimei's reputation remained torn between the legendary powerful onmyouji and the "killer" of magic.
Abilities: His actual magic are mostly small, single use spells like charms and paper talismans that do things like cast an illusion or lock/unlock a door or cause temporary invisibility. Binding and sealing and all that take time, more setup, and raw power that he actually doesn't have a lot of without support.
- He does have natural charisma? But magical vibes so that can be off-putting or uncanny.
- He has youkai blood, so he has spiritual sight and lives a long time.
- He can channel energy if there is energy to channel. His personal reservoir is pretty mediocre currently.
- He has studied divination, but mileage may vary since time is very flexible.
- He can share a spiritual bond with other creatures in the form of a contract where both sides support each other's energy, but this is a rather outdated form of magic that not many humans still use. And he did piss off a lot of the magic community.
Plans:
For the event, Seimei is going to play rescue side, so I'm offering him for anyone that wants to fight and have him do a lot of evasion/misdirection to avoid dying but not be great with combat. Or if someone wants to help a more man out, he is a support mage thanks!
General: I will probably get him set up doing more small magic things, maybe fortune telling (results WILL vary and may be made up wholesale), dubious charms, and things that he can do while not actually doing real work much. He's more con than legit when he can get away with it. I'd love for him to get more CR that does make him do real magic, and he loves to tease people so any volunteers for Seimei to befriend and then gently prank please let me know. Also CR to discuss more personal/philosophical things with though, because he is a fox who loves complicated answers and riddles. Or make him uncomfortable by taking him more seriously than he takes himself. He'll hate it and I love that. Unlike my murder son, he avoids violence as much as possible so please bully him.

There are parallels here.
Unfortunately, he is also very stabby and hard to get along with.

But they should totally commiserate on how revenge is valid and all people suck.

and i still need to get my hands all over seimei....perhaps some support mage/tank guy stuff in the event??
no subject
And yes please! Seimei is happy to play support and just buff everyone else because he's lazy and wants to watch a show. Or if he ends up by chance being in the RNG he might actually show some effort and then immediately after pretend it never happened.
no subject
and yesss, love a support guy... i'll throw shinji his way either way!
ah, although this party mingle is up now, are you planning to put either of yours up there... :eyes:

Seimei will gladly be an annoying nosy support constantly asking questions and teasing.
I will probably put at least seimei in! I might put both, so they can make more awkward friends and cause trouble.

and thank you seimei... luckily this is a dynamic shinji is familiar with... i shall keep my eyes peeled for them!
