Some reminders and notes for brand-bearers:
► Marks will appear on the body of the above. The location is player choice and may be singular or multiple. Feel free to be creative in the details of their appearance (read: colour, size, and so on). These marks may begin to slowly show from the time of this post and by the event date will be fully visible.
► Those marked will be subject to a variety of afflictions or situations [including but not exclusive to]—abductions, demonic or spiritual possession, mind control, a mysterious ability to cast elemental or blood magicks whether they normally can or can't, incoherent speech or perhaps no speech at all, and so on. If you don't like any of those options and want to suggest others, please reach out to the moderator team. We're pretty flexible here.
► Players may choose from multiple status effects of the above if they have a branded character. They may also choose a singular status or ability that they would like to have. There are no limits here, save common courtesy and communication with your thread partners.
► The branded will experience what feels like a 'call' or a 'lure' to Pessiria Forest. This 'call' will grow the closer we get to the event. By the time the event is live, there will be an overwhelming desire for those branded to pay visit to the forest. Characters will not know why, or what they'll find. Only that something important is drawing them there. The only way for the clearing, stone monuments, and pit cave to be located and discovered is if branded guide and navigate others to it. Please keep that in consideration for when the event goes live.
► Those who are branded will ultimately be thralls to the eldritch-like creature that is conjured by the robed figures responsible for the abductions of the prior NPCs (and any marked who choose to take advantage of this option). You will feel compelled to protect this creature and guard it with your life.
► The side effects from the branding / marks can be nullified when another person demonstrates an act of selflessness for the benefit of the afflicted. For instance, risking one's life for another's would qualify. Do not treat that as an exclusive option. It is only an example. It will not remove the mark itself, but it will remove the statuses that can be caused by the marking.
► The branded will find their marks to fully disappear within a few weeks after the event has started. They should be completely gone by before mid-June.
Some reminders for those not branded, but may be impacted by those who are:
► Those not branded will be especially vulnerable to the new abilities and afflictions, specifically should those they know be under this condition. This could be due to bonds of friendship, familial, romantic, or any other kind of relationship. They do not need to be extraordinarily emotionally close to the afflicted for this to take effect. This means these people who are not afflicted will be more susceptible to mind control and will feel inclined to serve or defend their known party in question.
► During the portion of the event where fighting the eldritch-like creature is an option, those not branded will also have the ability to fight their fellow Chosen who have been branded.
► The side effects from the branding / marks can be nullified when another person demonstrates an act of selflessness for the benefit of the afflicted. It is very likely that the locals would be willing to help out Chosen who made requests like that. If Dazai isn't using money to pay them, like most other things, barter would also work (for items or errands).

Seph with blood magick means maybe being able to spread his cells. Can he spread his cells into any NPCs during this? He would probably target the ritualists specifically, even if he can only infect a couple.
If he infects another character (be it PC or NPC), I would go with the same restriction Jenova's head has: The cells are dormant unless activated during a crisis or an event, etc. Otherwise, these characters all live their lives as if everything were normal.

We would suggest if you wish to use other peoples' characters and have this, to notably get player permission and discuss that with potential thread partners. If this does come up, let us have a list of potential other players impacted by this, as we may be inclined to use this in a future event involving the ritualists.

So in terms of it being an ability he would have: It isn't! But for this event as a Branded, he'd have blood magick. If he can use his own blood as a weapon and stab it into others (ew) or something similar he could spread cells that way, with mod approval. He's resisting the mind control element so he'd be acting on his own.
As far as players, it's something a couple are tentatively interested in. Obviously, I want any player characters infected with Jenova cells this way to have the ability to back out any time, though.

So as mentioned on my app, Chuuya has an aspect of his powers he calls 'Corruption'. Basically, it's Chuuya without any limiters on in a berserker state that is extremely powerful, usually only used when in a life or death battle. Since they're going to be compelled to guard the eldritch creature with their life, is this potentially on the table for use?
As a note, he's... uh. quite likely to cause property damage or even deaths (tentatively, and only if a player asks for that and plots it out, obviously) in the process until he's stopped. Gravity manipulation and black holes are kind of destructive like that. Luckily Dazai can nullify him in that state so it shouldn't last long, he's kind of like a safety device where Chuuya is concerned.

We would consider the events to be dire situations and do expect them to have these effects on various characters who may come with abilities that are like Chuuya's 'berserker' state, so we find this entirely acceptable. We also understand that this goes somewhat hand-in-hand with Dazai's nullifying ability.
We do ask that should Chuuya destroy anything that we need to know about (people, locations in Aldrip, something in Pessiria Forest, etc.), do just say something, so we can address it when it comes up. Otherwise, property damage is perfectly fine (as are any deaths that arise and are agreed to, as applicable).

My question is about the mind control element specifically. Are the branded somewhat aware but ultimately unable to do anything about it? or completely in the dark?

This is entirely dependant on what is IC of your character. If your character is familiar with concepts like mind control or has experienced it personally in canon, witnessed it, or related, they would be more likely to be more aware, which would give them a bit more of an advantage where they may not be entirely under the control of the creature everyone will be facing during the event.

A little follow up question/assumption since it's entirely dependant on what is IC for a character.
Let's use those who are entirely enthralled and unaware as an example. They would still mentally retain the same personality BUT they've got a fun new motivation they're not going to question (very easily), right?

That said, the extremity to which they change is up to player discretion. If players choose to play their Branded warped and corrupted, that is an option available to them, but it isn't something we're forcing. Players have the flexibility to make that decision on their own about how far they want to take their character.
