With mod permission, Sephiroth will be using the Branded blood magick to infect people during the event. A few ritualists will be hit, but he could strike player characters too if you want him to!
Sephiroth's blood contains Jenova cells and, very long story short, due to various bits of sci-fi/fantasy madness he can control anyone with these cells. This control can be in the form of hallucinations, mental commands, seizing complete control over someone's body, and shapeshifting someone against their will (this last one is very unlikely to come up though, he's more likely to project an illusion on top of someone to make them appear to be something else).
Some notes:
Sephiroth's infection may or may not impact an upcoming event as well.
So! If you are interested let me know. We can play out characters getting infected if you want or, if you want to handwave, assume they got hit during the brawl with the eldritch horror.

-Jenova cells spread during the vent will be dormant until specifically activated by Sephiroth. Once he is done they go dormant again. That means infected characters will live their lives as normal until Seph comes for them and then return to those lives afterward. If you WANT your character to go mad and stare towards Lorentia cave and think about Sephiroth constantly you can play with that but it is by no means necessary. I encourage you to do whatever would be fun and satisfying for you!
-When characters are activated they might not know it. They may become obsessed with an idea or goal he's planted in them but otherwise act like themselves. (For example: In the OG game Cloud interpreted his call as a quest for revenge. Being obsessed with killing Sephiroth was still bringing him to Sephiroth). Play with it!
-Sephiroth is more likely to activate people when he's in crisis.
-Any mind control moments will obviously be planned well ahead of time with your permission, run by mods if necessary etc. If I come up with an idea you are not comfortable with we don't need to do it.
-If you want to get your character infected but have hard limits on what Sephiroth can do to them let me know. There is an Opt Out on this journal if you'd rather do that privately.
-If you get your character infected and change your mind later that is fine! We'll just say the cells didn't take too well.

Emet-Selch is also, well, Emet-Selch and could react to Jenova cells in a number of ways. I don't have any examples in mind but you know.

Well, I think I'll say LET HIM BE INFECTED and I'll see what happens later with the mystery event you mentioned. If it ends up making potential CR with him difficult and I change my mind, we could say that complications happened?

If you want to back out at any time complications/the cells not taking/etc is totally acceptable. I will never pressure anyone into keeping the characters infected if they're not interested.
